Iron vs Steel Scrap — What's the Difference?

How to Identify Iron vs Steel

Iron and steel are both ferrous metals, but they have key differences that affect their scrap value:

  • Cast Iron — heavy, brittle, has a rough/granular texture when broken. Common in old machinery, pipes, engine blocks, and cookware.
  • Wrought Iron — tough, malleable, often found in gates, railings, and decorative items. Has a fibrous grain visible when broken.
  • Steel — an alloy of iron and carbon. Lighter than cast iron, stronger, and more versatile. Used in construction rebar, structural beams, automotive parts, and appliances.
  • Stainless Steel — steel with chromium added. Non-magnetic (mostly), rust-resistant, higher value. Common in kitchen equipment, medical instruments, and food processing.

The quickest test: use a magnet. Both iron and mild steel are strongly magnetic. Stainless steel is usually non-magnetic or weakly magnetic.

Scrap iron and steel are graded based on:

  • Density — heavy melting steel (HMS) vs light iron (tin cans, thin sheet)
  • Cleanliness — free from concrete, wood, plastic, or other attachments
  • Size — pre-cut pieces vs. large structures requiring dismantling
  • Alloy content — plain carbon steel vs. alloy steel vs. stainless steel

Industries That Produce Each Type

Different industries generate different iron and steel scrap:

  • Manufacturing — steel offcuts, defective parts, old tooling
  • Construction — rebar, structural steel, corrugated sheets
  • Automotive — car bodies, engine blocks, suspension parts
  • Shipping — ship-breaking steel, marine hardware, containers
